New DVD Player

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

Remember our old DVD player story? After 2 months of troubleshooting, the contractor finally got back to us with the problem. This shows how ‘efficient’ they are.

The problem: The PCB board is spoilt beyond repair. PCB is also known as Printed Circuit Board. Seriously speaking, i find that electronic appliances manufactured in the recent years have shorter life-span as compared to their ancestors. We hardly use the DVD player (maybe only during the weekends) that we had bought and the PCB board ended up getting spoilt. What’s this man?

Are the materials getting more and more vulnerable or are they doing this on purpose? I know of some manufacturers who used sub-standard components with life-span of around 1 year in some electronic appliances. That explains why most products are only under 1 year warranty. If you take care of it well, you may find that by the time you need a repair, the one year warranty is long over. Clever right? Harvey Norman has came up with something called the “extended warranty“. You can further extend the warranty for the product for 2 or 4 years. We got this special warranty for our DVD player set from there.

Thank goodness for the extended warranty we had taken up 2 years ago, Harvey Norman decided to give us a full refund of the current spoilt DVD player. We got another replacement set today.
