Is Marriage Counselling effective?

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

A recent incident with my friends motivates me to write this blog entry.

Nobody can guarantee a good marriage except yourself.

My hubby and I never considered going through formal marriage counseling. Not because we feel that we can make our marriage work for sure, but we do not like the idea of having strangers ‘telling’ us what to do. Marriage is a personal issue and as a couple, most of the things discussed in a face-to-face counseling session should have been settled between us way before the thought of getting hitched.

I have heard of sad stories of couples breaking up after going through a formal marriage counseling session. Someone they thought is suitable for life, but have to part just because an expert told them they are unsuitable. I find this response a bit funny. Is the expert making decision on your behalf? And if something happened if you follow your own heart, would you blame the expert for not telling you?

Of course i do read up on marriage resources online now and then; just to see what other couples went through and learn from their mistakes. Besides going through face-to-face marriage counseling, there are alternatives like online marriage counseling which might be more effective. There are sample videos and materials for you to read to keep that spark alive. Some of them are actually quite meaningful! :)
