Gokusen 3

Yankumi” is back! A passionate teacher who did not give up even after being allocated a class full of terrible delinquents. Her Yakuza upbringing gives her the strength and fighting skills just adequate to control the students in the class.

It was motivating to watch this show as it relates to my passion. But if i were to be in her shoes, i will be the first to run off from the school. No way am i going to handle that class full of spoilt brats and violent students and putting my life at risk. Sometimes i wonder if teachers should be equipped with self-defence skills instead of merely just Standard First Aid skills. Not all students are respectful of and obedient to teachers nowadays you know?

I do learn a lot of morale stories from this drama. It teaches us to view students from a different point of view. The most notorious student in the class can be an angel when being alone with the teacher. She found out that he was being bullied by other students since young, and now he just want to show that he is ‘boss’ in front of others. It turned out he is a good boy with a good nature. :)

I do pity such students though, because there’s a reason why they behaved this way. I’ve seen my old secondary school friends turned from bad to worst over a span of 5 years.

Some of the reasons i observed and collected from some of the students are:

  1. Bad peer pressure (Just your luck to mix with the wrong company)
  2. Bad upbringing
    • Parents worked too hard and ignored child’s feelings (turn to friends for advice and to complain)
    • Overly pressured to score good grades (kids take revenge)
    • Always comparing with other kids (kids feel unappreciated)
    • Teach the wrong values from young (hard to change mindset when they grow up)
    • Overly pampered by parents (kids become over-dependent on others)
  3. Lack of holistic love and support from family and friends
  4. Wrong school and wrong class (try putting a hardworking smart kid into a class of lazy bummers. No wonder schools mix and match students nowadays, and not solely by the grades alone)
  5. Watch too much violent shows

I wonder how common the above reasons are, but this is what i’ve gathered over the years. As educators/parents, can we do something about it?
