I attended a free talk this afternoon on ‘How to be a better public speaker‘. I noticed several useful points which could also be applied to blogging publicly.
Some of the topics discussed today are:
- How to capture audiences’ attention
- How to ‘connect’ to your audience
- How to make your presentation more interesting
I didn’t really have time to try out the following so far due to my tight work schedule. Blah.. i know.. my *excuses again*
Question 1: How to capture audiences’ attention
- You can use eye capturing images in your blog entries. As many bloggers out there should know by now, a picture speaks a thousand words. How true. People remember visual images better than a slide/entry full of words.
- Create competition/lucky draws. Yes, this should work if the prize is fantastic, perhaps an iPod or iPhone?
- Incorporate music into your blog. Hmm… it depends on how fast the server loads. The last thing you want a visitor to do is to wait for your music script to load fully.
Question 2: How to connect to audience
- Make your blog interactive. Maybe play some ‘how much you know about me’ games.
- Begin with a story closer to the readers’ heart. For example, begin your post with something like ‘Have you ever feel that life is unfair?’ If they feel the same thing as you, you’ve got the connection, and they will read on…
Question 3: How to write interesting blog entries
- Get a life, explore around the island for things nice to share in your blog. Example, If you like food, go hunt around Singapore for cheap and good food. Write reviews about them.
- Surf and surf. A good place to surf for topics and content is to read forums. Research on the hottest topic in town and write a good blog article about that.
Of course it will be nice if i could do all the above. Sometime it could be real difficult and it requires lots of hard work from the blogger themselves. Sad to say, for me, i am personally very lazy.
At the end of the day, you would have to try to stick with a personalized niche for your own blog.
I hate to read blogs which have no specific direction, i.e. just post entries for the sake of earning money. It’s too commercialized. It’s really hard to find really nice personal blogs nowadays. I need a role model! :(

Great points. I do a lot of public speaking and blogging so I agree 100% about the similarities. Getting and maintaining your audience’s attention in both situations is difficult.
One of the things I’ve found helpful in selecting an interesting topic to blog about is to talk to people and see what’s on their minds – sometimes their perspective alone is enough to give me a start on a good topic.
Great post (and I agree that blogs seem too un-personal these days).
