I had been feeling melancholy at times for the past few months. And sometime, I just want to watch a sad show and fall deep into the story lines.
When I saw the title ‘Yuuki‘ from the google search results, I just went to click it and watch it just before I had dinner on one of the weekends. It was a wrong move.
This was a true story and the more I felt strongly for the character – Yuuki. It chronicles the life of a young man, named Yuuki, who died at the age of 23 after an illness that started with the partial collapse of his cranial bone, and a subsequent battle with seven types of incurable diseases.
In the movie, Yuuki was traveling alone in a foreign country and he had forged true friendships with a group of people at a backpacking lodge. One fine day, he noticed he had a toothache while brushing his teeth. A friend staying at the lodge encouraged him to see a dentist as soon as possible.
A simple visit to the dentist reveals something big and frightening. He went for a MRI and the doctor discovered a hole on his skull. Further test reveals that his skull is actually dissolving slowly . There’s really nothing wrong with his teeth. That’s a sign.
The cause of this disease is unknown, and it’s incurable. The only temporary solution is to remove the dead tissues around the exposed skull and to patch the dissolved area with artificial bone.
Upon hearing the news, he put on a brave front and started calling up the new friends, asking them to visit him in hospital. They were shocked to find out that his illness is worst than they initial thought of.
During his stay in hospital, he encouraged all his friends, individually, to pursue their own happiness and not to give up doing what they like. I was truly touched by his unselfish actions. He is sick yet he chose to spend his last days fruitfully by ensuring his friends find happiness in their lives.
Even though I did not know him personally, if he were my friend, I will honour and remember him forever. He’s truly a good friend.
